The nursing profession has become more challenging and demanding due to the changing health needs of people and the advancement of technology. The demand for well-educated and trained nurses is increasing, making it a popular career choice among students. In recent years, nursing education has been a popular choice among Nepalese female students. After completing their S.E.E. exams, many girls choose to study nursing. The nursing program in Nepal aims to provide students with the academic and practical skills needed to deliver high-quality health care at the national and international level. It combines coursework, clinical experience, simulation, and skill practice, and focuses on producing nurses who can make independent decisions and judgments.

The scope of the nursing profession is expanding. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree offers a range of job opportunities in different sectors, such as the armed forces, schools, voluntary organizations, universities, health services, clinics, private and public hospitals, and healthcare providers. Graduates can work as children’s nurses, health visitors, high-intensity therapists, midwives, physician associates, mental health nurses, and adult nurses, or as lecturers, counselors, social workers, and health service managers. In addition to Nepal, the scope of nursing is also growing in foreign countries like the US, Australia, and Canada, where nursing degree holders have excellent career opportunities and the possibility of obtaining permanent residency in Australia. In India, nursing professionals can earn up to INR 234,753 per year, while in the US, Australia, and Canada, they can earn up to $45,000 to $65,000 per year if hired by a reputable hospital, nursing home, or clinic. In Nepal, they can earn up to NPR 32,000 per month.

PCL Nursing is a three-year practical-based course equivalent to a diploma course, which can be completed after completing S.E.E. exams. It is offered by both private and government nursing colleges in Nepal, including IOM, NAMS, BPKIHS, CTEVT, and KU. The entrance examination for PCL Nursing affiliated with Tribhuvan University takes place in Bhadra and is based on a question pattern that includes 45 marks for science, 25 marks for English, and 10 marks for math. The selection criteria are based solely on the entrance exam. The entrance examination for PCL Nursing affiliated with CTEVT takes place in Bhadra, while the scholarship entrance exam occurs in Shrawan. The question pattern for this exam includes 50 marks for each of the subjects: science, English, and math. BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences offers 40 seats for PCL Nursing admissions, with 16 open seats, 1 Hill District seat, 2 Dalit seats, 1 staff seat, and 5 full tuition seats. The entrance exam takes place in Shrawan.

PCL Nursing

Students who have completed PCL Nursing and have two years of clinical practice can apply for the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) program. The exam date for the BN program is usually in Ashwin, and the scholarship exam for the program, regulated by the Ministry of Education, is held in Poush/Magh. Students who have completed PCL Nursing and have two years of clinical practice are eligible for this exam. There are six colleges in Nepal offering the BN program under the affiliation of Tribhuvan University, each offering 40 seats. NAMS offers 22 open seats, 6 seats for Nepal government employees, and 2 seats for Bir Hospital employees in the BN program. Kathmandu University offers the BN program in four colleges under its affiliation, with each college offering 40 seats. The entrance exam typically takes place in January. Purbanchal University offers the BN program in 20 colleges under its affiliation, with the entrance exam typically taking place in Ashwin.

B.Sc. Nursing

B. Sc. Nursing is a four-year program that can be pursued after completing +2 level education with biology as a major subject. It is offered in Nepal under the affiliation of Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Purbanchal University, and Kathmandu University. This bachelor-level program, which was initiated in 2005 with the goal of preparing academically strong graduate nurses with the ability to work as care providers, managers, teachers, and researchers in nursing, is based on an annual system and has a duration of 48 months. Admission for the B. Sc. Nursing program in Nepal opens in August or September, with classes starting in November. All nursing colleges in various universities in Nepal offer 20 seats for the B. Sc. Nursing program.

Master in Nursing (MN)

After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing, students can pursue a Master in Nursing (MN) program, which is offered in various colleges under the affiliation of Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Purbanchal University, and Kathmandu University. It is a two-year program, with a total of 5 seats available each year. IOM offers three specialization areas in the Master in Nursing program: Women’s Health & Development, Adult Nursing, and Child Health Nursing.
