Certification and credentials are frequently cited as areas in which the private sector falls short in education. It is frequently considered that certification should begin at the state level, because a private company producing certificates will inherit discrepancies and be unable to maintain quality. The International Baccalaureate is a well-known example of a qualification that is virtually universally desired. This credential is awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a non-profit educational organization founded in 1967 in Switzerland.
The IBO was born out of a genuine market necessity. This was constantly addressed in private international schools throughout the world regarding what appropriate school-leaving test they might give to pupils who are geographically mobile and wish to obtain a credential that is recognized in all of the major educational systems. National examinations were often poor, of questionable quality, and certainly not of international standing.
True, certain foreign degrees, such as British A-levels, received some international recognition, but this was mostly limited to the Anglo-Saxon world. The question was whether a single curriculum and university admission criteria could be designed to accommodate as many linguistic and cultural groups as possible.
Any institution that offers one or more of the four IB programs is considered an IB School.
IB programs seek to provide students with a multidisciplinary, cultural, national, and geographical education. In 1968, the Diploma Programme (DP) was launched. Its goal was to provide a challenging yet balanced education that would facilitate geographical mobility by providing a globally recognized university entrance credential while simultaneously developing intercultural understanding and tolerance.
IB developed a continuity of international education for children aged 3 to 19 with the launch of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in 1994 and the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in 1997. In 2012, the advent of the Career-related Programme (CP) broadened the range by providing students aged 16 to 19 with a choice of foreign education paths. These four IB programs can be offered independently or in combination by institutions.
How to partner with IBO for IB?
The IB organization first requests that schools participate in an authorization procedure to see if they meet the IB World School standards. Following approval, the school will get an assessment and curricular plans. A follow-up is carried out to ensure that the IB programs are adequately delivered to students. Finally, at the end of each course, the IB organization evaluates students’ progress, resulting in consistent techniques and criteria throughout all IB schools.
